Veterans Recognition Dinner

During November, 2016, the Frank C Godfrey American Legion Post 12 hosted a Veterans Recognition Dinner to honor all who have served in all conflicts. Our guest speaker was Bernie Edelman, Executive Director of Vietnam Veterans of America and author of "Dear America, Letters Home from Vietnam" and several other books. Bernie's book was made into an HBO special and was the winner of two Emmy's. Bernie was also the first Director of the Mayor's office of Veteran's Affairs in NYC, named to that position by past Mayor Ed Koch.

The event was attended by more than two hundred persons, and in attendance was several noted local politicians, including Mayor Rilling, who gave the welcoming introduction from the City of Norwalk. The Color Guard was from the 102nd Connecticut Infantry. Amazing Grace was performed on the bagpipes by Ed Prescott, Deputy Fire Chief, and the National Anthem was performed by noted local tenor,  Matt Surapine. At the conclusion of the evening, Reed Corbo performed Taps on the bugle. Post Commander Richard Olson led the gathering in the pledge of allegiance and welcomed those in attendance on behalf of the legion.

Charles Williams, a member of the legion supplied the musical background of favorites from all the wars, and concluded the musical presentation with "here's to the Heroes" by the ten tenors as all veterans in attendance were called to attention by Colonel Mickey Koleszar.
